NOTICE: This coming Friday, October 27 2006, will be the final day to give notice to the BIA in Sault Ste. Marie of your current address for the dispersing of Docket 58 monies. This, according to Jinny Gillette, is only for those who have submitted an application for this docket. Dispersing of funds will be March 15, 2007 and checks should be received no later than the end of March 2007. According to Gillette approximately ten thousand applications were sent in 1997 and 1998 and about five thousand applications were returned. Those who did not file an application WILL NOT be getting an allotment check from the BIA. You can contact the BIA in Sault Ste. Marie at 877.659.5028 x 3131 and speak to Ms. Gillette. To update your mailing address with the BIA you can fax it to 906.632.0689

Concern over the application process lingers in my mind, because the BIA did in fact send out applications. In one instance that I am aware of the application was sent to an address which was 20 yeas out of date. When the person called the BIA earlier this week she was informed that she would not be getting any part of the Docket 58 monies, which she is entitled, because she never returned the application which was sent to her. This in my mind is ludicrous. Ms. Gillette told me that the BIA had sent news releases and ran articles in local news papers, and if you didn't see it it was not the fault of the BIA. In my estimation the BIA, GRBOI, INC., Senators Levin and Stabenow, and the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs owes it to the Indigenous People of the Grand River, and Great Lakes Region to rectify this horrid error and ensure that those who are eligible to receive funds be added to the allotment list. I would like to hear your thoughts and comments on this injustice and will post them appropriately.
